font sucking

Anil Dash, as you may well know, gives good rant, when he happens to be feeling ranty. This time it’s about the Windows font dialog. Insanely entertaining, and also true, too.

More or less reurbanized

So we’re back from the family reunion tour through Bella Vista, Arkansas and Topeka, Kansas–;and made it through relatively unscathed, although Lorie seems to have caught a mild cold, the sort of thing one often gets from travelling. Also, clip-on sunglasses for her prescription frames were lost, sometime during the journey home.

I think this is the first visit with family (Lorie’s or mine) since our relationship began, that we’ve been able to conclude without any sort of shouting match or other major psychological trauma ensuing at any point. All in all, a fairly relaxing and enjoyable trip. It was, of course, absurdly hot and humid, and neither of us much enjoyed the rural feel (Lorie on her Aunt Karen and Uncle Jim’s new house, when no one else was around: “it looks like a Country Store threw up in here!”). I just don’t ever really get the appeal of “country” life, that so many seem so fond of (We drove by the exit for the Precious Moments Chapel and mercifully kept on driving, altought Aunt Dorothy and Aunt Karen did share some reminiscences of past visits.). On the flight home, I was paging throught the latest Metropolitan Home magazine, with all its gleaming urban surfaces making up the walls of my own particular sanctuary.

I couldn’t help noticing, while we were there, that Topeka actually looks and feels not that different from Seattle. The main difference is Topeka’s streets tend to be wider. I think I’ll go look up how the population numbers compare.

Better

Sometimes the world does hand you a break. As it turned out, the canine-induced eyeglass damage griped about in my last post was something that could be fixed by the mere replacement of the plastic earpiece doodads on the end of the temples. This was something the nice eyeglass store person actually took care of for nothin’.

Much as I do appreciate that, I remain cranky because I’ve worked 125 hours in the last two weeks on a project that seems to be in a Flaming Death Spiral, and tommorrow morning we fly to scorching hot Arkansas (It’s worse than that, even. For reasons too complicated to explain here, we’re actually flying to Kansas City, then driving five hours to Arkansas (up around Fayetteville) all in the one day tommorrow) to visit relatives who seem to be smack in the middle of a bitchy feud about the family farm and we gotta be to the airport like around 6am and it’s almost midnight now and despite two weeks worth of awful sleep deprivation for some reason I’m all insomniac tonight.

My talent for composing endless yet grammatically sound sentences seems to be improving, however. (This post should also serve as fair warning that FD will be even less update-prone than usual, as web access will be plenty scarce for the next week.)
