What’re you doin’ New Year’s?

The past year, while not perfectly horrible, has been the sort of thing that one merely tries to live through, and hopes that something better comes along. I tried to review the year in terms of personal accomplishments or even pleasant memories, and I really don’t have much except a continuous sense of daily grind. The one thing I feel I can really point to isn’t even so much a this year thing, as an anticipation of next year: I managed to negotiate a new position with my employer that will allow us to move back to Chicago by February. It’s also a better–;although not immediately better-paying–;position. It’s within the company’s new enterprise Data Architecture group, to which I will be the first hire. This would appear to offer much better-fitting career potential than I have had as a member of a software development team. I’ll be reporting directly to the Director, who also happens to be a world-class data architect, with exactly the skills I want to have when I grow up. I’m pretty exited about both the new professional situation, and the move.

So here’s to the passing of a miserable year, and to better days in the year ahead—;.

Feeble Brained Incompetents

OK, this is in fact number one on the blogdex as I type, but what the heck–;I haven’t really echo-chambered in a while:

Step away from the almanac—;.

At this point, the best we can hope for is that Justice has some sort of rope-a-dope strategy going here–;that they’re trying to lure some terrorists into a false sense of security. Because if our G-men are really this stupid, then I gotta figger al Qaeda can do pretty much whatever they want at this point.

UPDATE: Making Light has a much better post about this than mine.

stones remixed

While I’m sure it gives many of their longtime fans the howling fantods, this disc of Sympathy for the Devil remixes by The Rolling Stones is pretty damn cool, in my estimation. As others have noted, the real treat here is the latter half of the Neptunes version, which puts Mick’s vocals and chosen snippets of Keith’s guitar solo over not just a new backing track, but basically an entirely different song (and they make it all fit). It’s magic. The Fatboy Slim and the other one are pretty good, too–;and of course you got the original on there. (The “radio” edits, it should go without saying, are pointless filler.)

This disc inspires two main thoughts: 1) I wish they’d let me into the Stones’ tape vault, and 2) there should be more cool remixes from classic rock recordings in general. Of course, the specific tracks would have to be chosen carefully. Off the top of my head, I’m thinking “Crimson and Clover” and “Magical Mystery Tour” have a lot of potential.
