R.E.M. - Accelerate
I think this album fits about where Tattoo You did for the Rolling Stones; it’s not that it’s necessarily all that great, it’s just that it’s a damn sight better than you thought they were even still capable of at this point. Which, for a band that goes so far back as a critic’s darling, seems to be enough to fire up the critical saliva glands. I saw where Spin gave it a nigh-unbelievable 4.5 stars out of five. I happen to be enjoying it quite a bit lately, myself, but that’s just ridiculous.
