Yesterday was Pancake Day

Did you know it??
Some people did but no one seemed up for a revival of the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Racing tradition. Here is what I got from Wikipedia~

"On Pancake Day, pancake races are held in villages and towns across the United Kingdom.[15] In 1634 William Fennor wrote in his Palinodia:

"And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne."

But the tradition of pancake racing had started long before that. The most famous pancake race, at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan (skillet) and race to the finishing line tossing the pancakes as they go. As the pancakes are thin, some skill is required to toss them successfully while running. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times.

The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney was so busy making pancakes, that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake."

Since the weather has turned balmy and springlike, Marcel and I have got a case of Spring Fever, big time. There has been much promenading in the park, and splashing in mud-puddles. The latter being out of character for Marcel, but it may have been due to sheer giddiness from fresh air and sunshine, combined with the cornucopia of sights and smells outside of our backyard.

We took these before it got warm.
A fancy dogue in one of his favorite outfits, posing in the coveted comfy chair.

In such a fancy outfit he might have fit right in with the crowd at Lyric Opera on Friday, for seeing Cosi Fan Tutte. Could he have made it past the animal rights demonstrators in his fur?? That is the question. They might not have a problem if you can prove you grew it yourself. But I digress.

He's regal.

chair_brando.jpg

You betcha.

Yesterday I even finished the second of the Trekking socks, while sipping coffee at The Grind, and trying not to get apple pie, even though it was there, and calling out my name. The door was propped open and it was just like summertime.
Oh, and on our way home from the park, Marcel and I got a big, wet, muddy doggy paw on the arm from Lucy the Spaz (not to be confused with my niece, Lucy the Human), also known as Marcel's girlfriend, our neighbor's boxer, whom we haven't seen in donkey's ears. So happy!
More later.

Guess who

was baptized yesterday?

Lu_church_glib.jpg

Its true! It was Lu!!!

Lu_shoulder.jpg

Lu_Beez_Gramma.jpg

Everyone who was anyone was there! Grandma, Aunt Pippy! Many friends and family. Including my new best friend~

audrey.jpg

Audrey!!
Its hard to get her when she's standing still! Because she doesn't!
Audrey is 2 and a half, and rawther energetic! Which is why we love her! She and I both had swishy skirts, which we demonstrated to one another, several times. Unfortunately there was no photographic evidence because we were too busy! Later on we played at being porcupines.

Anyway, Lu was pretty cool until somebody dunked her in some water and then she wasn't so sure,

but she recovered nicely.

Later at home she visited with Milo.

They weren't quite sure what to make of one another.

Snowy goings-on

Whoa!

cel_path2.jpg

Snow!

cel_path.jpg

These were taken early in the day, too. Every time we go out, he's up to his (pardon my crudeness- but its true!!) wiener in it!!! Probably you wouldn't like it too much either! Or maybe you would, which would make you weird.

cel_blur.jpg

Marcel does not like it one bit. Uh-uh.
He's not sure whose bad idea this was

cel_blur_2.jpg

But when he finds them he is going to give them a stern talking-to.

cel_stern.jpg

You betcha.
Plus he is incredibly sick of looking at me, because I have been laying low for 2 reasons, the weather and also I have a cold. So I've been doing a lot of napping and a little bit of knitting.
Plus I finished the green sweater for Joey Helpy-Chalk, except for sewing on this little patch pocket that goes on the sleeve. If anyone has any advices for sewing on patch pockets please do share. It seems like it ought to be easy but I don't want to mess it up.

green_sweater.jpg

I also have to get three buttons for the left shoulder. All of which I probably said before but my brane is getting soft from sitting in the house, blinking at Marcel.
I've also almost made another Trekking sock. Pitchers later.
Its smaller so it fits better, so I decided to frog the other one and start it over.

Oh and plus just when you thought it couldn't be more exciting, there is progress in the Chicken Kitchen! With the installation of the chicken bracket/basket by Mr. Goddamn Sunshine-

As well as the chicken curtains being up on the windows in their Valentine's red splendor-

I go make tea now.
More later.

In the Chicken Kitchen

Ok, its totally like the freaking Artic Circle outside, jeepers.
A small, somewhat baldish (mostly on the undercarriage) little dogue could freeze right to the sidewalk. That's why Marcel and I are laying low and observing the goings-on in the Chicken Kitchen, where its been an eventful day.

Because first, this appeared on the kitchen window, ok its not a chicken but we thought it was pretty and also auspicious.

frost_heart.jpg

And then~ when we were having our coffee~

mug_box.jpg

It was shipped with love! Oh, how we love things that are shipped to us with love! Who can have enough? That's the thing.

box_beak.jpg

Hmm. Can it be?

box_open.jpg

The curtain fabric for the Chicken Kitchen!

feet_fabric.jpg

curtain_fabric.jpg

Mmmm. Chickeny.
Chickeny and kitschy! What could be better?
An Extra Bonus? Yes!
Because here is what else was in the box~

grl_sewing.jpg

A smallish packet! With a lovely sticker! Who doesn't love stickers?
I haven't met them!

And inside~

fabric_samples.jpg

Samples!
This is my favorite~

birdy_flannel.jpg

Because I dig those birdies.

In knitting news, I have overcome Sock Fatigue and am about halfway through the second, new and improved Trekking sock, with renewed enthusiasm. I made it a wee tad smaller and now I am thinking I may have to frog the first and re-do it so it fits better. To frog or not to frog. Stay tuned to the Knit-A-Log for developments.
I also have sewn one of the arms onto Joey's green sweater.
Pitchers to come.

Oh, and plus, before I forget! For your viewing pleasure, the shelves in the Chicken Kitchen~

Now that I have space for them I realize how few I really have.
Hm.

Molly Ivins, 1944-2007

Representative quote from NYT article~

--------------------------------------------------------------------

After Patrick J. Buchanan, as a conservative candidate for president, declared at the 1992 Republican National Convention that America was engaged in a cultural war, she said his speech “probably sounded better in the original German.”

A smart, bawdy Texan with a biting sense of humor. Her columns made me laugh and laugh. She will be missed.
